A metaphor is a figure of speech comparing to objects or actions even though it is not literally accurate. Metaphors do not use "like" or "as," but rather make a direct comparison.

Examples:

She is a walking dictionary.

My son's bedroom is a disaster area.

His harsh words were a knife in my back.

Our teacher planted seeds of wisdom.

Laughter is the music of the soul.

She was certain that life is a fashion show.

And in the words of Shakespeare,

"All the world's a stage,

And the men and women merely players."
