An orderly visual search pattern is a process that safe drivers use to identify all information relevant to the driving task.

A typical process is:

1. Look in your 3-5 second travel zone (where you'll be 3-5 seconds from now) from left to right for potential hazards.

2. Look in your 5-10 second travel zone for potential hazards, and glance as far straight ahead as you can see

3. Scan your rear-view mirror

4. Scan your side mirrors and speedometer

5. Repeat: you should spend about a second for each of the above steps.

Although at first it will seem strange to not be looking straight ahead all the time, by keeping your eyes moving in this manner, you'll be able to see hazards that you wouldn't ordinarily have seen until it was too late.
