Population Balance Models are a way of predicting property distributions of particulate entities within a system. For example. Say one wants to find the droplet size distribution given off by an aerosol spray can. Using a population balance model one can do these things. They are derived from the Boltzmann distribution and require a great deal of mathematics to solve.
