Food EBT can be used at the point of sale system to purchase food items from retailers. Cash EBT can be used much the same way, except they will pay for non-food items. So say you buy a bunch of bananas and some paper towels; the bananas can be deducted from the Food EBT balance, and the paper towels can be deducted from the Cash EBT. A cash EBT card can also be used to withdraw money from you existing benefits balance from an ATM in the form of physical cash.

You simply need to provide proof of financial burden that would make it difficult to obtain appropriate funds for you (and your family) to eat. You would need to provide proof of citizenship, proof of residency, and your employer will need to send in proof of income. Once that's done, you qualify, you're set!
