It's illegal. Stop at stop signs, observe, and if conditions allow, continue driving.
There is none. Running a stop sign is a volatiion of traffic regulations not of statutory law. They always exist and will appear on your traffic record. If you have a traffic ticket just go ahead and pay it.
In all states it is law to stop at all posted stop sign regardless of the condissions
Yes. You must stop at stop signs in shopping malls. Sometimes the fine may not be the same as for running a stop sign on public property. In one state it is a violation for refusal to obey a legal traffic sign. A stop sign is a legal traffic sign under state law. Also, if you fail to stop for a "private" stop sign, you can be held responsible for any resulting damage or injuries occurring from your actions.
against the law
I don't know. But you have run a stop sign. You have violated a traffic law. You have (been lucky) not have caused an accident that could have ended in your death or some innocent deaths. Don't count the cost of your fine. At least you are still alive to pay the fine! Learn by your mistake, and don't do it again.

if there is no line or crosswalk your first stop is where you can safely see oncoming traffic
No. Such a law does not exist in NC, nor in any other state. ALL vehicles are required to come to a full and completestop at a stop sign. I've known cases of the Johnston County Sheriff's Office citing people for failure to stop at a stop sign simply because, even though they did come to a complete stop, they took off before their car settled.
California state law allows for fines for traffic infractions statewide. The cost of failing to stop at a stop sign in Santa Rosa is about 159 dollars.
no they can't mail trucks still have to obey they law
The correct answer is NO. A stop sign is considered a Regulatory Sign. Regulatory signs are typically the colors black, white, and/or red. Regulatory signs regulate traffic and tell a driver about a law. Examples include speed limits, yield signs, one way streets, do not enter signs, no turning, no parking, and (yes) stop signs. A warning sign, on the other hand, is typically diamond-shaped and the color yellow, orange or pink. They warn you of possible changes in the use or condition of the roadway ahead. A stop sign is not warning you to stop. It is TELLING you to stop because that is the law.
The term legally enforceable means that it is a rule or regulation that if broken, consequences can be enforced. Some examples include running a stop sign, speeding, harming someone in a fight, and arson.
