Moldova is one of the former Soviet bloc countries that gained independence after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. Russian troops continue to occupy the territory because of a dispute between the official government, the communist Republic of Moldova, and a secessionist faction of Slavic and Russian descent that has declared part of the country the "Transnistria Republic" (also called Trans-Dniester after the Dniester River, or Pridnestrovie), which the Russians support.
According to the CIA World Factbook, the estimated population of Moldova in 2009 is 4,320,748.
The population is currently undergoing a slight contraction (-0.079%) due to emigration and nearly balanced birth (11.12 births/1,000 population) and death (10.8 deaths/1,000) rates.
According to Moldova's 2004 Population Census, the primary ethnic groups living in this region are Moldovan/Romanian 78.2%, Ukrainian 8.4%, Russian 5.8%, Gagauz 4.4%, Bulgarian 1.9%, Other 1.3%.
