Samuel Greg built the mill in Styal because of its access to water power from the River Bollin, which was essential for operating the mill machinery. The location also provided a local workforce from nearby villages, as well as access to transport routes for exporting goods. Additionally, building the mill in Styal allowed Greg to take advantage of the growing demand for cotton textiles during the Industrial Revolution.
