We had a green card in the 70's but moved to another country and now cannot find it, can we still be able to retrive the green card ???
Not automatically; However, a "green card" (lawful permanent residency for aliens) makes someone elligible for a "right to work" social security number. One must request it at a Social Security office. A green card does not make you eligible for a "right to work" social security number. The "right to work" social security number is given to an alien that has received a "work authorization document". Having a green card will make you eligible for a regular social security number, with no restrictions related to it. In most of the cases when you are applying for a Green card, you might already have a Social Security number (this apply when the Permanent residence is through adjustment of status). This number will be the same when you get your permanent residence, only that if you had restrictions to work it will change to NO restrictions. If you are applying to a Green card though marriage, you will be entitled to apply to your social Security number once you receive the letter of approval from the USCIS
The US government has a form of 'green card lottery' where a small number of people from a large number of applicants, are able to get a green card. Beware though, because there is a common email scam where people are told they have won a green card - without them ever applying, of course - trying to trick them into sending money for processing fees and such. A real green card lottery winner would be informed by postal mail in most cases - but anyone who hasn't applied should automatically be suspicious.
If you actually had a green card and you lost it, take your passport to the local Immigration office and fill out the form to replace it. They will put a temporary stamp in your passort while you wait for your new green card.

If one is an immigrant to the United States of America and is in need of a green card so that they may work legally, they need a green card lawyer. Green Card lawyers are found in green card law agencies.
