The first post boxes appeared in Paris around 1653. The system was the brainchild of Renouard De Valayer. It wasn't an original idea - postal systems had been in operation for centuries. But he probably gets the credit for the first service to use post boxes in which to send and receive mail. In the Britain the earliest known post box dates from 1809 and was commissioned by government officials. In the US Thomas Brown gets the credit for the first post boxes around 1815.
