Why are some countries so populated?

There are many reasons for large population. For some, it is because they simply have enough space and resources to grow that large. For others, it is because of a combination of outdated traditions, poor living conditions (resulting in a higher child death-rate, meaning more need to be born so enough will live) and simple lack of education.

Physical factors such as relief in terms of elevation, soils and climate can affect population density as these conditions affect the living environments and lifestyles of the people living in these conditions. Therefore, the population density will vary if the physical factors above vary.

In an area where the soil if fertile and flat and the climate is temperate, it is very likely to be densely populated. This is because where there are temperate climates, plants can thrive better and ripen and weather changes will be minor and will not affect the crops, as compared to a highly unpredictable climate, in which plantation involves a big risk. In an extreme climate, it is also very unpleasant to live in. Furthermore, fertile soy contains many minerals such as phosphorus etc, which are very useful for the plant to thrive. Some soils are not favourable. For example, thin, rocky and acidic soil does result in low agricultural production. If the ground is low and flat, this will also encourage a large population as plantation will thus be more convenient and the crops need not have to be planted on an elevation where it is harder. If crops are planted on hills, occurrences such as soil erosion will ruin the crops. However, on flat and low ground, soil erosion is much less common.

Additional factors such as vegetation affect population density too. Areas of open grasslands and woodlands are very easy to settle in. However, there is a certain type of vegetation that does not promote population density. If the vegetation is comparable to jungles and swamps, then it is very hard to settle in as there is no space for settlements. It is also very hard for one to weave his way through the thick rainforest.

Coastal areas are usually densely populated as they provide a link to other ports which make accessibility to transport and trade easy.

One of the most favourable conditions which promote population density is the abundance of resources. Plenty of water, timber, minerals such as coal, oil and copper enable countries to develop, as they can be used for building structures, services, or even trading. An example of two countries which are abundant in resources would be Western Europe & Eastern America.

Sometimes, within a scarcely populated area there is an occasional area that is able to accommodate the needs of people. For example, in the eastern part of Papua New Guinea where shifting cultivation is practiced, the people have to find new areas to accommodate their needs. Among the mountainous land in Papua New Guinea, there are also countless woodlands with sufficient open areas and fertile and substantial soil, so the majority of the people will settle here and use this area for cultivation. After this certain area's soil is not fertile anymore, they will gather at another place to practice agriculture. This is why within a mountainous region where the population is scarce, a densely populated area can also be found.

Thus, to conclude it all, it is the needs of the people and also the properties of the landscape which determines which areas of the world are densely populated and which areas have virtually no population at all.
