When you are sober you think that you would not drive drunk.

But when you are drunk, that's a different thing all together...

Drunk driving kills people. Not always, but too frequently, and it leaves other people severely handicapped, especially the innocent victims.

Alcohol is widely used because it reduces stress by quieting areas of the brain. Too much, far less than makes you legally drunk, will impair cognition (awareness), judgment (decision-making), and coordination (muscle control and reaction times). When driving a vehicle, any of these is enough to cause a tragic accident, and all three are at play! Perversely, the inebriated individual will very often fail to appreciate the impairment!

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and other groups have lobbied for laws and systems to reduce the incidence of DUI, especially among "social drinkers." Public programs include driver education, tougher DUI laws, alcoholic beverage laws, mandatory sentencing, and installing breathalyzer interlocks.
