In 1877 R.H. Macy opened the Macy and company department store in NYC. The symbol of the red star comes from Mr. Macy's past as a sailor. First day sales totaled 11.60, but by the end of the first year they had made 90,000. Soon the store occupied 11 buildings. In 1902 it out grew it's location and moved to where it now sits today in NYC and in 1924 it was the "world's largest store" with more than 1 million square feet of selling space.
