It seems to be relative to the amount or profit you are hoping to make. I'm looking into this now and i'll break down the costs as I seen them. This is all in addition being able to stay afloat financially for the 4-8 year period it takes for these fungi to reach production levels. Its best if you are someone with lots of disposable income since investors are hard to come by for this type of grow unless you have already done it. Luckily I'm still young and this is my retirement plan. There is no guarantee that any tree or orchard will produce any truffles in 4 years or ever. Good luck

Orchard hay is usually just a grass hay, so it may be your local hay. There are similar types of grass hay, (timothy, rye) and sometimes you can find them mixed with other types of hay. This kind of hay is good but for most horses they may need alfalfa or oat hay in addition to orchard. 'Easy keepers' do well with orchard hay because they maintain their body weight more easily.
White truffles cost from about $1000 to over $2000 a pound, and black truffles cost from $300 to over $600 a pound. Those prices reflect American dollars and local (U.S.) delivery, as this is approximately what the better eateries have to pay to get them. You'll not be seeing them in the produce department of your neighborhood grocery store.
