They are accepted at most major places. Not all local places will take Amex because of it's high transaction fee. However, if you shop at Wal Mart, Raleys Grocery Store, or any company that's "large", then they will usually take Amex. Smaller locations rarely accept the card such as local restaurants, non-major gas stations, non-chain mechanics, corner shops/convenience stores and the like. Amex is not accepted in nearly as many places as Visa, MasterCard, or Discover cards.
