I have been a Nurse Practitioner for over 10 years. There are positive and negative aspects of every professional choices in life. I believe being a NP is the choice for me. I had practiced psychiatric nursing for many years, then after the birth of my daughter, I returned to school to switch clinical tracks. I have been a pediatric NP for the past 5 year. I feel that I am making a difference in all my families lives, my community, and health care. I recently finished my Doctorate of Nursing Practice studies- Now I am a doctor Nurse. The disadvantages are dependent upon the state one choses to practice within. Some states limit NP practice guidelines. Several MD organizations are attempting to limit NP's. There can be tension between MD and NP providers at times- but usually it is because MD's are nervous NP's are taking their business. It does come down to $. I would never change my career choice- being an NP if great.
