The first Hess branded gas station opened in Oakhurst, New Jersey in 1962. Today there are over 1300 stations in 16 states on the east coast. As an interesting side note they began offering toy trucks with tanks that could be filled with water and emptied through its delivery hose for $1.39 each (which included a free battery) during the Christmas holidays in 1964.
