When a child is born it gets one of these blood proteins from its parents. If an AA and a BB parent mix the only option is AB. AO and BO could turn out as an AB, AO, BO or and O. If one parent has an AB the parent would pass on either the A or B protein. Since A or B is always dominant over O, no matter what the other parent had, the child would have to be and AA, AO, BB, BO, or AB.
