A brown spot on the skin may just be a mole. BUT, skin cancer can 'disguise' itself as a mole. Most people aren't aware of this fact. If you find a brown spot on your skin, then, the safest thing to do is to go to your Doctor or GP. :)

YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE COLOR OF THE LESION, ANY ABNORMALITIES, AND THE SIZE AND HEIGHT OF THE LESION. Most skin lesions are benign, even with the following information taken into account. An accurate diagnosis requires a biopsy. If there is a question of malignancy treatment can require freezing, cauterizing, surgical removal, and may require further treatment after its removal if a malignancy is determined. Skin growths can consists of Acrochordo skin tags which are benign lesions; Keloids skin lesions which are caused by acne; Deratosis Papulosa Nigra which are benign pigmented lesions; Pyogenic Granulomas which are a begin lesion: Seborrheic Keratoses which are a benign lesions and more. There are many forms of benign skin lesions which pose little harm to your health; some require no treatment and some may need treatment to prevent them from becoming worse.

Is it two different colors of tan or brown, light and dark brown? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is it black? GO TO THE DOCTOR. (I know you said it was brown but for future reference.)

Is there a change in the color, other than what it once was? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is it a lesion that was NOT there before now? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is it a flat lesion or elevated? Close your eyes and run your finger over the skin's surface. Can you feel a raise in the skin? If raised look at the raise, its size, if it is more than 1/5 inch high, GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is it larger than 1/5 of an inch around or grown in size?Look at the lesion if it is larger than 1/5 inch around its circumference, GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is the margin or configuration abnormal in shape? Is it larger on one side than the other? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is it smooth or rough? Run your finger over its surface; is it abnormally rough, crusted or scaly? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is the skin abnormally thick? Does the skin feel thicken, leathery? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Does it feel as if it is filled with fluid? This may or may not need to be reviewed by a doctor, take all of the other symptoms, the shape, the color and the size into account. If it is larger than 2/5 of an inch, just smaller that ½ inch, GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is the skin hardened? Does the skin feel extra tuff? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Is it painful or ulcerated? GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Dose it itch? GO TO THE DOCTOR.
