Risk factors for breast cancer in young women include family history of the disease, genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2), dense breast tissue, and exposure to radiation. Early detection methods include regular breast self-exams, clinical breast exams by a healthcare provider, and mammograms starting at age 40 or earlier if there is a family history of breast cancer.
Screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, like cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. The goal of screening exams, such as mammograms, is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Breast cancers that are found because they can be felt tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast. In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be small and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) for a woman with this disease.
Doctors recommend monthly breast exams at your age so you can begin to know your own "normal." If you do breast exams on a monthly basis, you will begin to notice certain lumps and bumps that are normal for you. That way, if anything does become abnormal, such as a breast cyst or a tumor, you will be able to quickly recognize it and seek medical help. There's really no reason not to do them! As far as a Dr. exam, any time is a good time and then start monthly exams on your self.
