Depression & Bipolar are classified as 'Mental Illnesses' as they stem from a chemical imbalance in the brain. My opionion is that having an illness that is classified as a 'Mental Illness' doesn't make you mentally ill or crazy.
Unfortunatelly many people who suffer from depresssion/bi polar have this stigma attached - because it's difficult to understand their behaviour is not by choice, but the result of a chemical effect in the body - and people who don't understand the illness are quick to label sufferers.

They only detain mentally ill people when they pose an immediate threat to themselves or to others.

They were among the first people that Hitler killed. He considered them "useless eaters."

The only way to prove to others that anyone is mentally ill is to have that person examined by qualified medical people. Sometimes they will confirm your belief that the person is mentally ill, but sometimes they will tell you that you are wrong.
In 1970, gay people were considered mentally ill, and private, consensual same-sex intimacy was illegal in most states. There was also terrible stigma that gay people faced a life of hedonism, followed by aging, depression, and loneliness. Many also linked gay people to pedophiles.
