Hello! I have intermittent explosive disorder, and I've tried various methods of treatment. It's virtually impossible for a person experiencing and IED episode to take control of their actions of calm down, as the mania overwhelms every other thought. The best thing you can do is condition the patient to have an outlet for aggression. You have to make them go through the aggressive activity regularly until they find that activity a more viable release for IED aggression than hurting a person. Mine is chopping wood with a sword, but many other outlets must exist.

The best thing you can do for IED, however, is to work out. I gave up Tegretol (an anti convulsant also used to treat IED and Bipolar Mania) after sticking to an intense workout schedule. While this consumes two hours of my day, it regulates my serotonin enough to keep me from ending up "rigged to explode." It takes a while for workouts to buffer IED, but it's well worth it, and the health benefits alone are worth it.
