The menstrual cycle has several phases; the two most relevant to this question are menstruation and ovulation.

Menstruation (often referred to as a "period") is the start of a cycle which cleanses the system. Around 14 days after that begins comes ovulation (the release of eggs from ovaries); roughly 14 days after this the body flushes the system again with another menstrual cycle and begins all over again.

The number of days can vary from person to person and is also affected by age, health, nutrition and chemical intake (drugs of any kind) but, the average for a complete cycle is considered 28 days by most medical professionals.

However, cycles anywhere from 27 up to 32 days are not unheard of. Common anecdotal references throughout history have often quoted the cycle as following the lunar cycle which would be 29.5 days. The reality is every women will be slightly different.
