Yes, apparently they can. I have swollen lymph nodes in my neck near some horsefly bites. I went to my school's clinic and the doctor told me that the swelling was my immune system reacting to the poisons in horselfy bites. Hope shes right and that it isn't something worse! Good luck. :)
