At 17 weeks gestation, a fetus is not developed enough to breathe on its own. The lungs are still in the early stages of development, and the ability to breathe independently typically doesn't occur until around 24 weeks or later. Premature babies born before this point often require significant medical support, including mechanical ventilation, to help them breathe.
They are sent to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) to be taken care of until the baby can swallow on its own and knows how to breath without to much help.
If you spank the baby, it will stimulate her to cry.
Yes, and this would be a medical emergency. Once the umbilical cord is broken, the baby mouse is no longer receiving oxygen through the mother's blood and has to start breathing on its own. If it is trapped in the placenta or amniotic sac, it can't breath and will quickly die.
Hopefully, as soon as the baby has been delivered from the mother, the baby will start to cry lustily and breath.
