How well I know this problem! My dogs have had red, itchy bumps and lumps with puss sometimes. They are long haired breeds. I tried cortisone, pills, shampoos and all sorts of vet suggestions. I then tried diet. It was the clue. Absolutely no people food! I switched them to Nature's Recipe (Petco and Petsmart ) Lamb and Rice canned food and a few days later, they were on the way to total recovery! No more skin issue's!
