There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2." Type 1 herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus type 1 ("HSV1") generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases. Type 2 herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus type 2 ("HSV2") usually only infects those body tissues that lie "below the waistline" and it is this virus that is also known as "genital herpes." Herpes simplex virus type 2 is not usually the virus that causes cold sores, although it can.
It is a pleomorphic Gram negative bacilli.
When a person gets chickenpox, the rash will go away but the virus is still in the body and becomes dormant. Herpes simplex causes the cold sores or genital herpes.

Caution - Although Herpes 1 (coldsores) is a slightly different virus to Herpes 2 (Genital herpes) it can be transferred to your genitals and have similar effects. So if you have a coldsore try not to directly touch it and then your genitals as this could transfer the virus and have some pretty unpleasant and lifelong effects, there is no cure for Herpes Simplex 1 or 2 although treatment is getting better and work is underway to find a vaccine. Also don't engage in oral sex with anyone when you have a coldsore - you can transfer it that way too
herpes is a virus that infects the nerve cells in your body. there are several serotypes (varieties) but the most common are HSV1 (herpes simplex virus 1) and HSV2. while HSV1 is more commonly "oral" herpes and HSV2 is more commonly "genital" herpes, both can be transmitted to either location. There is no treatment for herpes. once you have been infected, you are infected for life. A person can only treat the symptoms of herpes to make the outbreaks less painfull and of a shorter duration. There are no holistic remedies that have been scientifically proven.
