There are several drugs currently available that have the same base as the medication Nitrofuran or Nitrofurantoin. Brand names Furadantin, Macrobid, Macrodantin, Nitro Macro and Urantoin.

They are all used to stop the growth of gram positive bacterial, E-Coli. E-Coli is a bacteria normally found in the bowel. When it travels to the bladder and from there the kidneys, it can cause Urinary Tract Infections.

Nitrofuran is only effective in treating E-Coli in humans, therefore is only recommended to be prescribed for UTI or cystitis.

It should always be taken with food to prevent it from causing nausea and vomiting, and because it is absorbed >40% better when taken with food. Once this medication is started you should always finish all the pills, even if you start feeling better after a couple of days.

There are some medications that should not be taken with Nitrofuran, so be sure and tell your doctor an pharmacist all medications you are taking. Woman who are pregnant should only take this medication under doctors advice. It is usually not prescribed in the last trimester or prescribed for babies or young children be sure and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
