Most certainly, just as you may have never learned to play the violin (or maybe you have), you can still learn to play with practice. Learning a physical skill like learning to play an instrument is training our brains as it is our nervous system that links to our muscles we are retraining rather than our muscles.

The exact same process is at play regarding training or re-training our thought patterns. You may never have learnt to interpret situations in a positive light (or maybe you have), but that doesn't mean you can't learn to do that. The main problem people hit when attempting to re-train their brain regarding mental health issues is that they try to get rid of unwanted patterns rather than create new ones. For example, stopping thinking negatively rather focusing on thinking more positively.

What does the brain register first- visual or audio information?

I think your brain processes visual information first because you naturally see things before you hear them. Like when you see a person hit a pitch, you see it but and instant later you hear the "crack". That has to do with light traveling faster than sound.
