Strep Throat aka pharyngitis is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (gram + cocci, catalase + , coagulase -) and can be associated with serious complications such as Rheumatic Fever and Glomerulonephritis if left untreated. These complications are due to anti-step antibody cross reactions with normal antigens of heart and kidneys. Even though the strep throat infection is self limiting, penicillin treatment is mandatory to prevent heart valve and kidney damage.

SO if you believe yourself to be suffering from this type of infection, please seek medical attention.

Most throat infections are relatively benign, but some (strep throat is an example) can lead to other problems that could be life-threatening.

If you have a high fever, or if your throat is too sore to swallow or seems to be swelling shut, you should get medical attention. If there is little or no fever and you are able to swallow -- if it's just painful to do so, but not hard -- then continue to monitor, take plenty of liquids, and gargle with 1 tsp. of table salt in a glass of warm water occasionally. Tylenol or Advil should make you more comfortable.
