It depends on

-the severity of your symptoms

-if the child inherits traits

The level of heritability for BPD is estimated to be 52-68%.This is about the same as for bipolar.

What is believed to be inherited are the temperaments for affective dysregulation (strong mood swings),impulsivity and interpersonal hypersensitivity (being too sensitive when in relationships),not the full disorder.

-how committed & how much help/support you have

-where you are in your recovery & your age as BPD can improve slowly with age

-if your child is adopted (adopted children tend to have more mental illnesses)

In my opinion there are quite a few risks ,it is probably better to get a pet & not pass on the genes or work with children if you really don't want pets, try to volunteer & take part in your community, help with after school programs.. if your reason to have children is to contribute something to the world.

Disorders similar to bipolar disorder?

borderline personality disorder Not by a longshot.....Borderline personality disorder is a personality disorder that involves the thought processes of the individual who has it. There is no chemical component and, although meds can control some symptoms, they cannot manage all as is the case with bipolar disorder. Borderline personality disorder is difficult to cope with because it can mimic any and all psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder...but also schizophrenia, sociopathic, psychopathic, depressed, etc. Typically, there are lies and manipulation involved. There is more self-mutilation (basically, self-mutilators are diagnosed with this) and other self- destructive behaviors. YES, they can have mood swings, but much faster and more often that ohse with bipolar disorder. I don't know who answered this, but they are WRONG. Want examples? Go look up famous people with each disorder. You'll see....good luck!

What is the prognosis for borderline personality disorder?

Borderline personality disorder has a poor outlook because noncompliance with treatment is common. But when someone is committed to treatment and stays in therapy often times they are treated with DBT(Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) the prognosis can be good. BPD is also said to be outgrown in certain instances as are other personality disorders but not in all cases.

Is there a such thing as a borderline bipolar disorder that becomes active in women only during a time when she is involved in intimate relationships with men who are really smart?

Sounds way too complicated to be true. You either have borderline personality disorder or you don't - it does not "activate" only at certain times. There is no such thing as a borderline bipolar - they are two different mental illnesses.I would advise this woman to seek a good therapist who can help her figure out what exactly is going on during these relationships.

Why would a woman with a boyfriend show interest then disinterest in you but stalk you when you reject her and tell you to leave her alone for no reason when you give her another chance?

She has Borderline Personality Disorder and is a very sick, dysfunctional individual. Google it. Good luck :)

What is the difference between manic depressive narcissism and borderline personality disorder?

First of all, Manic Depression is now referred to as Bi-Polar Disorder and it is a mood disorder. Narcissism (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) and Borderline Personality Disorder are that, Personality Disorders. Someone diagnosed as manic depressive narcissism sounds like a dual disorder, one disorder 'confounded' by another. Since manic depression is bi polar disorder there is a dis-regulation in the highs (mania) and lows (depression). Some people self medicate by using alcohol (a depressant) when they are too high, and using cocaine for example (a stimulant) when they are too low. It is the body's attempt to find a stable mood. Both alcohol and stimulants can exacerbate the signs and symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The 'Narcissistic rage' ignited or inflamed by alcohol is one example. NPD tend to be angry, nasty, exploitive, explosive, evasive, demanding. They are extremely difficult to get along with or live with. NPD have a fear of abandonment, real or imaginary, can not manage emotions in adult fashion, and will initiate break up, take no responsibility for outcome and bask in victim-hood. Borderline Personality Disorder also shows signs of distress around abandonment, real or imaginary, and can not regulate emotions. BPD also rage when they are afraid, fearful or insecure, which only serves to push people away. "Mommy Dearest" is a good portrayal of BPD. There is a spectrum of axis II personality disorders often overlapping. Plenty of info on line. Barbara Kennedy MPH/MSW
