Yes, it is possible to be HIV positive 20 years after exposure. HIV can remain dormant in the body for many years before symptoms appear or an individual is diagnosed. Some people may not exhibit symptoms for a long time, and without testing, they may be unaware of their status. Regular testing and medical check-ups are essential for early detection and management of the virus.
There are two conditions you must meet. First is being positive for HIV infection, and you determine that through a blood test. The second is having an "indicator disease" like Kaposi's sarcoma or pulmonary tuberculosis. If you are HIV positive without an indicator disease, you're just HIV positive. For instance, Magic Johnson is HIV positive, but he never developed an indicator disease so he doesn't have AIDS.
I don't think there is a maximum. I know 2 people who are on antiretrovirals and one has been hiv positive for over 30 years, the other just over 20 years. So there is no way to tell.

Average life expectancies for HIV positive individuals can vary depending on lifestyle and location. I would encourage you to discuss concerns futher with an HIV specialty medical provider. They will be able to address specific lifestyle changes that can help people with HIV know what choices will maximize the time they have and the comfort they experience.
I've been HIV positive for over 20 years now and drink about a 2 liter of Pepsi a day for roughly about the same amount of time. I really don't see or have a problem, caffeine isn't really a big concern to the other problems a HIV infected person can face.
I've been HIV positive for over 20 years now. I'm also extremely bipolar with drug addiction issues to further complicate things. When I was first diagnosed, it was also common to prescribe a anti depressant at the same time a person was given a positive status. I have been on and off anti depressants, bipolar, and HIV meds for the last 15 years or so. I guess I've been living proof that the human body has the ability to adapt and survive quite a lot of what life can throw at you.
Magic Johnson - of course there are more but many of the celebrities that have come out having the disease are from 20 or more years ago and/or have died from the disease. If you google celebrities with HIV there are a variety of sites available.
