The appendix is a small vestigial single ended pouch which is attached to the intestine. Modern humans don't need this pouch and normally if it causes any issues it is routinely removed by an incision in the lower abdominal region.

Technically speaking appendicitis doesn't kill you since it is the swelling of the appendix, however if the appendix gets to the point where it swells sufficiently enough to rupture then this is called peritonitis and can cause blood poisoning and other complications by spilling the contents of the intestines into the body cavity.

The appendix can be inflamed but not enough to cause issues and this can last a lifetime without serious danger of death (However for safety most Doctors would recommend removal). This is called a "Rumbling appendix".
