Can you get periodontal disease from kissing?

i know of a husband and wife who both have very bad breath and i think diseases of the mouth can be transmitted by kissing because i don't think they both had that bad of breath before they kissed.

Most people don't know that periodontal disease is contagious, and was probably contracted at an early age. Microbes are passed from one person to another, instigating the first stage of periodontal disease: tooth decay. gum disease is the same thing as a wound on your arm - it must be kept clean to heal. If not, it becomes infected. The pus in an infected wound can also be found in pockets of gum infections.

Other stages include pyorrhea and gingivitis, usually considered separate diseases, but which are actually part of the same disease. Loose teeth, bleeding and pain are all evidence of the microbial organisms settling along the gum line and working their way under, where they will settle in a place that cannot be reached by flossing and brushing.

To combat periodontal disease, one must be able to clean under the gum line, where pockets form between teeth and gums in the presence of decay.

Oral irrigation with water cleans under the gum line where the bacteria live.

No you can't get gingivitis from kissing or sharing drinks. You do pass the bacteria involved in causing gingivitis back and forth. Brushing and flossing will prevent gingivitis.
