whilst depression is the hardest thing for a doctor to fix if your off work with it most employers will keep you off for a year but during this time they will half your wagw then quarter your monthly wage ect ect until they reach a decision that you are not fit for employment so yes they can eventually let you go.
(in the US) You can be discharged regardless of your attendance status UNLESS you are off work due to a Workman's Compensation finding or award.

Yes you CAN, but if you become more sick or become injured because an employer FORCED you to work while you have been 'signed off', then your employer is liable BIG TIME. If you signed a legal waiver and chose to work while being 'signed off' then the consequences would be your problem.
