Can you kill yourself by holding your breathe?

Because your muscle controls cannot overide the brains ability to ensure the safety of the body. It will make you breathe, even if under water. Its called the self preservation mode. Its also why you can survive with one punctured lung, the other lung will work twice as hard to keep you alive. The body has mant redundant systems of this nature. Its also why you get frostbite. The brain knows that you can live without your fingers and toes and even the tip of your ears and nose. It conserves heat by stopping blood flow to these areas to preserve the bodys thorax where most of your life sustaining organs are found. The brain is the last to die.

its impossible to commit suicide by holding your breath because when holding your breath eventually you have a reflex of a deep exhalation to get stagnant gasses out of your lungs such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen and even if you can force yourself to overcome this reflex you would eventually pass out from lack of oxygen to your brain and after passing out you would begin breathing as normal and after a few seconds or minutes wake up again so yes its impossible to kill yourself by holding your breath

Well I do understand your idea to this Question but why wont you ask the mins you're suppose to hold your breath too ?

It is possible if you do it in a swimming pool.

1st. Do a "Hyper-Ventilation" to get rid of the carbon-dioxide in your lungs. (If the amount of Carbon-dioxide in your lungs exceeds the limit, it will trigger your body to breath. If the level of Oxygen in your blood decreases to a point, it can also trigger your body to breath, but not as effective as Carbon-Dioxide Level.)

2nd. Hold you breath. Your body will run out of O2 before the level of CO2 can trigger you to breath.

3rd. Unconscious. After passing out, you would begin breathing as normal.

4th. Due to the fact that you are in the water, when you begin breathing as normal (Still unconscious), you would breath in water instead of air.

5th. You drown.

This is similar to "Shallow water black out".

Because holding your breath is a conscious effort. If you hold your breath long enough to lose consciousness, your body will automatically start breathing again.
