No. A radiant barrier requires an air space to function properly. If the radiant barrier s sandwiched between two solid objects, then the heat will be able to conduct right through it. If you would like to apply a radiant barrier over your existing roof, one solution would be to use spacers or furring strips over the existing roof and use either a tile or metal roof over the spacers. If you must have asphalt shingles, then the radiant barrier would have to be applied in the attic space.

A similar issue came up when people wanted to install a radiant barrier under concrete where it would have any air space. In a letter to a manufacturer, the FTC wrote, "It is well accepted that reflective insulation and radiant barrier products must have an air space adjacent to the reflective material to be effective." I am including a link to this letter below.

How do you install dimensional shingles over 3 tab shingles?

Complete instructions should be included on the shingle package, but essentially what you will be doing is placing the top of the new shingle against the bottom edge of the old shingle, assuming the exposure of the shingles is the same.

When you install shingles over an old layer of shingles do you have to put down felt or do you put the new layer of shingles directly over the old layer?

With composition shingles, no felt is necessary between shingle layers. When the exposure of the shingles is the same as the old exposure, the bottom edge of the old shingles is used as a guide for the upper edge of the new shingles in placement. This ability to place the shingles would be lost if covered with felt.

What is the bett shingle asphalt or laminate?

Laminates are asphalt based. Laminate just means that you have two layers laminated together to give you more of a "3D" look like cedar shakes. Your laminate shingle is a better shingle over the legacy 3-tab shingle. For the reason that it's all one, solid shingle. Less likely to lift in high wind. Plus, your higher life shingles are generally laminate style shingles(30yr, 40yr, & 50yr).

How do you install ridge cap using 3 tab shingles?

Cut the shingles into three individual tabs. Center a tab over the peak and put one nail on each side above the tar strip. Lay the next one over it as you would a shingle and continue to the end. On the last one, you will have to surface nail the shingle.

Can roll aluminum insulation be installed on top of blown in insulation?

Fiberglass and cellulose insulation work by slowing down heat transfer from one source to another. That's why the thicknesses of those insulation's are crucial for performance. Also, fiberglass and cellulose only resist heat transfer, they don't block or reflect it so it eventually escapes through. Perforated radiant barrier can be installed over top of existing attic insulation to form a reflective cover to enhance your other insulation. When installing radiant barrier over the attic floor you must use the perforated radiant barrier for maximum breathability. Moist air that is created inside your home must be able to escape as it rises through your ceiling. If a perforated radiant barrier is not used, the moisture will be trapped in between the barrier and your ceiling. When trapped this will cause condensation to form inside the building materials and insulation creating damage and mold. - EcoFoil

Can you paint over Radiant barrier foil?

Yes, you can paint over radiant barrier foil, but it's important to use the right type of paint. A latex-based paint is generally recommended, as it adheres better to the foil surface. However, painting may reduce the foil's reflective properties, which could diminish its effectiveness in reflecting heat. Always ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying paint for the best results.

Can you put kraft faced insulation in your attic over already installed blown in insulation and if so would you put the paper side down that is toward the rooms below?

I went to a seminar about attic insulating materials and this is what I learned. If you already have blow-in insulation in your attic you shouldn't need more fiberglass. Instead, you will want to install a reflective radiant barrier insulation. Fiberglass and cellulose are designed to slow down heat escaping so you eventually lose most of your heat through the ceiling regardless. You need something to re-direct the heat once it passes through the blow-in insulation. Radiant Barrier will reflect a majority of the heat back once it escapes your blow-in insulation. I bought some Ecofoil online and just rolled it out over top of my existing blow-in insulation, it was very easy.
