This is a narrow spectrum antibiotic, that targets Strep. aureus, but not much else other than that. It will work against some forms of dental abscess, but I would expect to see something with a bit of broader target range. Common treatments would include: Oral amoxicillin plus metronidazole, Co-amoxiclav monotherapy, or for penicillin alergic patients clindamycin.

If in extreme pain I would personally recomeend the use of Orajel Maximum toothache pain relief gel. It contains 20%w/w Benzocaine which will temporarilly numb the pain

Can flucloxacillin be taken for tonsillitis?

The cause for tonsillitis is either viral infections or streptococcal infection. You do not need antibiotic for viral infections. The bacteria which causes tonsillitis is streptococci. Streptococci practically never produce beta lactamase enzyme. Flucloxacillin is used to treat the beta lactamase producing bacteria. The antibacterial action of flucloxacillin itself is very less as compared to penicillin or ampicillin. So flucloxacillin for tonsillitis is a bad choice.

Is flucloxacillin the same as amoxillin?

No, flucloxacillin and amoxicillin are not the same; they are different antibiotics. Flucloxacillin is a penicillin antibiotic primarily used to treat infections caused by penicillin-resistant staphylococci, while amoxicillin is used for a broader range of bacterial infections. Both belong to the penicillin class but have different mechanisms and indications for use. It's essential to use the correct antibiotic based on the type of infection being treated.

Can you use staphylex for urine infection?

Flucloxacillin can be used to treat the urinary tract infection. Use of isolated flucloxacillin is not recommended for this condition. As it has little antibacterial activity of it's own. It should be used preferably with ampicillin or amoxicillin. (Resistance to flucloxacillin was reported for the first time, in London, in 1964, by staphylococci.)

Is ciprofloxacin the same as flucloxacillin?

No, ciprofloxacin and flucloxacillin are not the same; they are different antibiotics. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic primarily used to treat bacterial infections by inhibiting DNA synthesis. In contrast, flucloxacillin is a penicillin antibiotic that targets bacterial cell wall synthesis, mainly effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Their mechanisms of action, spectrum of activity, and indications for use differ significantly.

Can you take paracetomol while on flucloxacillin?

Yes you can take both paracetamol and flucloxacillin. There is no known significant interaction between either drugs and both can be taken together in moderation by following the recommended dose. As flucloxacillin starts to destroy the infection the pain will soon subside and paracetamol may be stopped. However flucloxacillin should be taken for the full duration of the treatment. Even if you are feeling better it is important to finish the antibiotic treatment course.
