Sharkey wouldn't be the first AIDS victim to shake his fist at the heavens and then set out to vent his anger on the rest of the human race. He was supposedly in deep denial about the lethality of his condition, both to himself and to others, and remained sexually promiscuous until his health deteriorated to the point where sex was no longer an option. My own opinion is that after being diagnosed, Sharkey really just didn't care -- classic narcissistic behavior. The glib -- but in this case true -- answer is that only Sharkey really knew.
