They were southerners, and did hold slaves. As slavery was abolished by Federal Law after the Civil War- and these bros did survive the war- They probably would have had to liberate them.

Many ex-slaves were retained as more or less captive servants on farms and plantations= well into the 1920s in some cases, and such things as sharecropping. It has been argued elsewhere that Slavery was (Bound-up) with agriculture and as there was a need for a seasonal and industrious labor supply- much more temporary work for ( All hands) in the planting and Harvest seasons- well Slavery had a niche in agrarian societies far more than industrialized ones.

One can also argue in the role of ( slavery-friendly) draft animals . Societies that had draft animals tended to keep people on a leash also- an example was Brazil, which did not formally abolish slavery until l889,. though the law was passed the prior year.

Stop and think this is ten years after the commercial perfection of electric lighting in Big Cities- such as New York and Con Ed Power and Light- then known as Edison Lamp works, shine a light indeed!
