Emphysema

A disease whereby the elastin in the walls of the alveoli is broken down by an imbalance between the production of neutrophil elastase (elevated by cigarette smoke) and alpha-1-antitrypsin (the activity varies due to genetics or reaction of a critical methionine residue with toxins including cigarette smoke).

The resulting loss of elasticity in the lungs leads to prolonged times for exhalation, which occurs through passive recoil of the expanded lung.

This leads to a smaller volume of gas exchanged per breath.

Why does a damaged alveoli result in less gas exchange?

because it keeps all the nitro oxide in.

Is the a cure for emphysema and why?

There is no cure for emphysema. The alveoli become damaged; they collapse so gas exchange is reduced.

How might damaged alveoli affect the oxygen level in the blood?

Damaged alveoli can reduce the surface area available for gas exchange, including oxygen uptake. This can lead to decreased oxygen diffusion into the bloodstream, resulting in lower oxygen levels in the blood.

Hyperinflation of alveoli with damage to alveolar walls?

This describes a condition called emphysema, a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In emphysema, the alveoli become overinflated and the walls between them are damaged, leading to reduced oxygen exchange and shortness of breath. Common causes include smoking, air pollution, and genetics.

Why does damage to alveoli result less gaseous exchanges?

Damaged air sacs have a lower amount of air surface. This reduces the amount of gas exchanged because the larger the surface the larger the amount.

What is destruction of the alveoli?

The lungs will not be able to process enough oxygen to keep the body working, and the person will die unless given supplemental oxygen. Emphysema (damaged alveoli) is a progressively debilitating disease.

Respiratory Structure Mainly Affected by Emphysema?

Emphysema mainly affects the alveoli within the lungs. Over time, the alveoli lose their elasticity and become damaged, causing difficulties in breathing and decreased oxygen exchange. This leads to symptoms like shortness of breath and coughing.

How does a damaged alveoli affect the person's ability to breath?

Damaged alveoli effect breathing because they are like little air sacs which take the air into the lungs. They are the lining of the lungs and they are the things that hold the oxygen in the lungs. If they are damaged, they cannot hold any oxygen, so the lungs cannot hold as much oxygen

What cause distruction to aveoli?

Aveoli can be damaged by obsessive smoking and general air pollution from burning fossil fuels (Such as coal). When aveoli is damaged, it loses surface area and therefore you cannot absorb enough oxygen to keep yourself healthy.

What would happen if your alveoli s got damaged?

I will not get clear air

When the alveoli become permanently damaged the resulting condition is known as?
