Yes they do. They can see and hear things. Their perception can be completely different. They can have full relationships with people that don't even exist. My sister has this and it's very hard at times but with the right medications and therapy, you can live a normal life.
Schizophrenia is a disorder in which you hear or see people that aren't really there. Despite common belief, schizophrenia is not even remotely close to being MPD (Multiple personality disorder). MPD is a disorder in which you have some number of people living in the same body. When one takes over, the other does not remember what the he/she was doing. In addition, you do not always see things in schizophrenia. In fact, it is very rare to actually see things. More than at least 75% of the time you just hear people talking to you when they aren't.
"Schizophrenia is a disease that makes you not be able to think very well. If you have schizophrenia, you might think that people are trying to hurt you even if they aren't. You also might hear or see things that aren't there."
Don't confuse Schizophrenia with 'multiple personality disorder'. the two are not the same. Schizophrenia can be described as dissociative disorder... where the sufferer may disconnect from reality. they hear things, see things, etc that aren't there.
Schizophrenia causes its victims to lose touch with reality. They often begin to hear, see, or feel things that aren't really there (hallucinations) or become convinced of things that simply aren't true (delusions).
There are two types of symptoms of schizophrenia: positive symptoms and negative symptoms:Positive symptoms are things that people with schizophrenia do or experience that other people do not.Negative symptoms are things that people with schizophrenia do not do or experience that other people do.Positive symptomsDelusions are beliefs that are not true, such as feeling people are following or trying to hurt them, believing other people can read their minds, or beliefs that they have special powers or abilities.Hallucinations are things that someone senses that are not real. The most common type of hallucination is hearing voices that are not there, but people with schizophrenia may also see, smell, taste, and feel things that are not there. Many people with schizophrenia have bizarre behavior, which is behavior that is strange or odd looking to other people.Disorganized speech is when someone speaks in ways that are hard to understand. For instance, sentences might not make sense, or topic of conversation changes with little or no connection between sentences. Sometimes the speech of someone with schizophrenia is completely incomprehensible.Negative symptomsLack of motivation and interest, especially in activities that he/she once found enjoyableNot being able to think as clearlyFlat affect or decreased emotions and emotional expressionSocial withdrawalNot taking care of him or herself
Seeing things you know are not there, or other people do not see are called hallucinations. This can be a symptom of several conditions, including certain drug intoxications, severe depression, schizophrenia, as well as other severe illnesses which may cause delirium.
Residual schizophrenia is caused by a partial recovery from schizophrenia. For an explanation of what causes schizophrenia, please see the related question.
you should see a psychiatrist for schizophrenia.
Most people do not believe that people with schizophrenia are possessed. Even if the general attitude towards schizophrenia is more negative than it should be, possession is not a common belief about schizophrenia.
Yes. Schizophrenia is partly genetic, meaning that if you have a relative with schizophrenia you are likely to also have schizophrenia. About 1/10 of people with a relative with schizophrenia develop schizophrenia, compared to 1/100 people without a relative with schizophrenia.
Disorganized Schizophrenia is the most common type of schizophrenia, causing a person to think illogically. It leads to uncontrolled actions making it hard for them to do normal daily activities such as eat, or bathe. They have a hard time expressing their thoughts and understanding what others are trying to say. Paranoid schizophrenia is drastically different from disorganized schizophrenia in many ways. Those who suffer from paranoid schizophrenia can still complete normal daily tasks by themselves. They can still concentrate well and have good use of their memory, unlike those with the disorganized form of the disease. Those with paranoid schizophrenia though suffer from delusions of the senses. Many people assume that people just "see things" but they also hear, smell and can feel things that aren't actually there. They also often suffer from extreme emotions such as jealousy, sadness, happiness, sexual desire and more. All types of Schizophrenia can be treated with medication and therapy but no cure has been found.
People with schizophrenia usually have normal cognitive function at the beginning of the course of schizophrenia.
