Physicians disagree about the use of anaesthesia during circumcisions. Before the mid 1980s, anaesthesia was not used because the US medical community refused to admit there was pain involved. This opinion has changed, however an aesthetic still is not always used due to a lack of experience with its use, as well as the belief that it introduces additional risks. Even though there is indication that the risk is minimal; some physicians who perform circumcisions do not use anaesthetics even after they received training. When an aesthetic is used, it only partially relieves some of the pain, and its effect diminishes before the post-operative pain does. The most effective form of aesthetic involves injections into the penis which is in it a grossly painful experience. Yes. If you are a baby you will get one of a number of anesthetics. Almost all physicians will use lidocaine injections in one of two methods, either a dorsal penile block, anesthetizing the nerves inervating the penis or a ring block, anesthetizing the whole base of the penis. We also give babies sugar water to suck while we do the procedure, this acts on some of the babies central pain receptors. This works because their nervous system is not fully matured and so it is like a very magnified euphoria any of us get when we eat sweets. If you are an adult being circumcised you will get much more anesthetic. But I am not a urologist, so I don't know the details. I do not know what is done during religious ceremonies

if you are an adult Yes. as the pain of doing such a thing to the penis is excruciating. they would have to ty you down to the operating table and gag you to quiet down the screaming. However if you are an infant that is not such a big problem as they have special boards that the infant is strapped down to and the use of any pain killer is unusual. the poor child can scream its head of and often goes into shock which is mistaken for sleep.
