Well myths say that if you are really a witch/wizard you don't need a wand because you have enough power in your own.
The same reason they're important today. People need something to believe in. We don't call them "myths" now, though. We call it "religion", just like they did back then.
If people believe these myths, earthquakes may seem more frightening than they really are. During an earthquake, people need to stay calm, not run off worrying about these not true myths.
