Not all cells cease to function at exactly the same moment, so there might be time for a tiny, tiny bit of growth before death is complete throughout the body. Biggest reason for it to look like nails have continued to grow is that when the skin dries out it shrinks and pulls back. With less fingertip, the nail will look longer.
