While chiropractic care can improve many types of conditions, this particular problem is best left to another type of conservative practitioner: A speech therapist. Speech therapists can give exercises to improve the neurological motor control of the speech pathways. Speech is a very complex coordination between brain signals controlling structures such as the vocal cords, the tongue, the soft palate, lips, accessory respiration muscles, the larynx and pharynx, and the diaphragm. This coordination can be improved, refined, and solidified with exercises. Chiropractic care does influence the cranial nerve and brain function when there is a “soft” neurological lesion. In my practice, I can provide an adjustment to the upper neck and see changes in the size of the pupils, the way the eyes move, the jaw joint, and even, yes, the soft palate. Some studies have shown improvement in dizziness and vision. Other studies show benefit from chiropractic care with migraine headaches. One study shows improvement in cognition with exercises where letters are flashed on a screen, and respondents are to decide if they were flashed backwards, forwards, or upside down; neck adjustments improved the score. I’ve seen the results of brain scans before and after an adjustment, showing increased activity. So, it’s possible to see changes, but it seems to be an indirect way to stimulate the brain area. I would prefer a direct therapy for the specific speech disorder, however I would be under chiropractic care anyway for the other manifold and multitude of benefits.
