If emphysema has lots of phlegm or fluid in the lungs, the person can feel like they are drowning. Even without phlegm or fluid, taking a breath can feel like an elephant is sitting on the chest.

I can’t speak for everyone with emphysema but I personally feel like I’m letting everyone around me down because I’m always too sick or too tired to go out and do fun things with them. I feel out of breath for no reason and I find myself wondering what the end stage is going to be like when I’m only at stage 2 and already I feel this poorly. I also feel very much alone in this even though I know that it’s the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA.
