I'm going to guess that you have had the dog checked by a vet. and that you are now using some form of anti-seizure meds. to prevent or at least limit them as much as possible. As long as you use caution with your dog, meaning keeping an eye out for the warning signs of a seizure, and then being there to help keep them from hurting themselves during one. Because that is your biggest worry now. You have the meds., you know what it is, now you need to protect them when they can't. This will sound wild, but the dog can feel the seizure coming and many times will try to show you. I always took one of my dogs to the same bed in a corner that was padded when she was in the first stages of a seizure, then I stayed with her until it was over, I wouldn't let her leave that padded area until the episode was over. After many months, and lots of seizures (we were in the adjusting meds phase), she came to me looking all funny and wooblie, waited for me to look at her, and then walked to the bed in the corner. Now, she wasn't perfect about it, but she knew 8 times out of 10, and that was my best warning bell. They can injury themselves so quickly during one, and if you aren't there you won't even know. So, if they have an old injury, or another condition, make sure your vet is aware of it because the tharshing, and strong muscle contractions are hard on them physcially, they must feel like they've run miles afterward. Your dog should live a happy regular life with plently of fun and be fine with some extra TLC! But if you every notice anything different about the seizure it self, call your vet!
Most cases produce symptoms but do not shorten life expectancy.
Autism is not a life threatening (or life-limiting) condition, and therefore has no impact upon a person's lifespan. Epilepsy can be at times life threatening and is likely to be life-limiting - however to what extend depends a lot on how well controlled the epilepsy is. According to epilepsy.com, if the person is otherwise relatively healthy epilepsy should not shorten their lifespan. Which is probably true, however (to me) it gives the slightly misleading impression that people can do things to help them become "relatively healthy", whereas what they are actually witnessing are epileptics who happen to be randomly lucky in their health. Gaitatzis et al in their study of "Life expectancy in people with newly diagnosed epilepsy " (pubmed 15371287) conclude that "Reduction in life expectancy can be up to 2 years for people with a diagnosis of idiopathic/cryptogenic epilepsy, and the reduction can be up to 10 years in people with symptomatic epilepsy. Reductions in life expectancy are highest at the time of diagnosis and diminish with time". The fact that reduction in life expectancy reduces the further away you get from diagnoses indicates that epilepsy which is treated and well controlled poses much fewer issues than un-managed epilepsy.
Some mild upgrades can actually lengthen the life. It's the major upgrades that can shorten the life.
Yes! The downside is this may shorten their life expectancy.
The same as any other person. Having tattoos does not shorten a persons life.
Epilepsy is not fatal in its own right. Someone could die if they get a seizure in the wrong circumstances, such as driving a car or taking part in some dangerous activity. Obviously someone with uncontrolled Epilepsy should not be taking part in dangerous activities without medical advice or supervision. It is those kind of factors that have to be taken into consideration. Even if someone has uncontrolled epilepsy, they could live a long time. Someone with well controlled Epilepsy could have a seizure in a dangerous situation too. So there is no real definitive answer to your question.
