It can be uncomfortable (physically/emotionally) but it doesn't generally hurt. It's a bit invasive, because you'll probably have a speculum inserted into your vagina to open it up so the gynecologist can get a good look and perform a Pap smear, which involves taking an internal skin scrape on a stick, but it isn't truly painful. If you're nervous, let your doctor know this and ask him/her to explain what they're doing to help feel comfortable with the process. But don't let your fear about the exam deter you from making the appointment. Gynecologist exams are critical to your overal health care.
