Does the baby break the waters?

Yes my daughter was born today without the waters breaking the midwife said it was very unusual and very lucky , there is a name for it but it escapes me , if born into a fishermans family the child is considered very lucky with an extra life !

A fetus grows for 9 months in the amniotic sac, which contains a special kind of fluid (often referred to as "water", as a mother saying, "my water broke" meaning the sac has opened). Since babies live in amniotic fluid, this gave women the idea to give birth while in water as a "gentler birth", such as in a wading pool filled with tap water (not in pool water, though, because it contains chlorine). Since this idea first began, many thousands of women have set up home births using a wading pool and tap water, with a midwife in attendance.

However, babies must take their first breath of air to expand their lungs. They must breathe deeply enough to move any fluids from the lungs up to the mouth. So even if a baby is born in a wading pool, the infant must be lifted up from the water to take that first breath and to cry (which moves fluid from the lungs). The baby cannot be left in the wading pool of tap water, or they could take a breath underwater which would fill their lungs--a medical emergency which could result in death. (e.g. same as a drowning)

Yes but not for ever, there is a much higher risk of infection, after so many hours the mother is usually induced if labour hasn't begun.
