The Midbrain is the topmost part of the mesencephalon, and so damaging the mesencephalon could potentially harm the midbrain, but only if that is the part of the mesencephalon you damaged.
The midbrain
Prosencephalon = develops to Telencephalon and Diencephalon = Cerebral hemispheres and collectively Thalamus,Hypothalamus, eyes, pineal gland. Mesencephalon = Mesencephalon = Midbrain Rhombocephalon = Metencephalon and Myelencephalon = Pons & Cerebellum
It is also called the mesencephalon
MESENCEPHALON gives rise to the mid brain and aqueduct of the midbrain
Midbrain also called the mesencephalon
midbrain (or mesencephalon), pons, and medulla oblongata
The mesencephalon, also known as the midbrain, is composed of the tectum, tegmentum, and cerebral peduncles. It is involved in sensory and motor functions, as well as other roles such as visual and auditory processing.

Yes, Alligators do have a tegmentum it seems! albeit less developed than a human mesencephalon, the alligator midbrain (mesencephalon) has more developed optic tecta instead. However in invertebrates, the tegmentum is the floor of the midbrain. i discovered a report on alligators in lake griffin which specifically referred to the tegmentum. heres the link .. www.jwildlifedis.org/cgi/content/full/44/2/280
The copora quadrigemina is located inferior (belolw) the pineal gland in a portion of the brain called the mesencephalon a.k.a. the midbrain.
